Base removes tons of trash during Operation Clean Sweep
Camp Lejeune, NC - The mission of Operation Clean Sweep is to "police" Camp Lejeune's training areas to return the base to a clean state and improve the environment for all personnel who train, work and live aboard Camp Lejeune.
It's been seven years since the base, along with all its tenant commands, has conducted a cleaning exercise of this magnitude, which resulted in 356 tons of debris being removed from Camp Lejeune. The current operation started Monday and is scheduled to be concluded by Friday, April 18th.
The Operation Clean Sweep Task Force, consisting of Marines, sailors, Coast Guardsmen and civilians, will be focusing on picking up man-made trash, debris and materials, both military and civilian. Examples of items being removed are junk cars, furniture, scrap metal, appliances and tires.
