Based on a big love for the people of the planet, FINNY’S GREENS was founded in 2006, by local Topsail Island resident Sara Webster.  A designer with an affinity for Mother Nature, little things in smart packaging, and the delight of becoming a new “auntie” many times over, a new product line of ECO-SAVVY BABY GOODS TM was born.

What began as rough designs of infant apparel pinned on her office idea board last fall “started to take shape when shared among family and friends,” said Sara, “and developed into an ongoing winter project.”

From the Webster beach cottage, “Creative inspiration was only one row over,” explained Sara.  Being surrounded by the ocean and ‘finny’ creatures made it easy for Sara to come up with the whimsical characters that highlight her creations.  With a Mac laptop “under” hand, and golden retriever, Jackson, under foot, the creative direction for Finny’s Greens unfolded.

Sara was already designing with ‘green’ in mind with a background in print and packaging design focusing on fair trade and organic clients.  Searching out sustainable materials for her own product line and “continually learning how to live and design with low-impact choice” were easy alternatives for Sara.

Finny’s Greens proudly launched the debut line of six-to-nine-months “fishy” onesies on Topsail Island Memorial Day week at the Quarter Moon Books and Gifts store.  The darling onesies boast the fanciful characters of Turtle Tu Tu, Shrimpy-Poo, and Seahorsey Lu, sure to delight parent, grandparent, and little-one alike.

Her passion for design, coupled with “the talents of many friends, colleagues, family and state resources, both on the island and off,” according to Sara, “has made this venture one of creativity, community, and distinct gratitude.”

The cute-as-can-be products are packaged as “gifts-to-go” in recyclable, reusable materials, not to mention even the packing is cute, making gift-buying for new arrivals easy and convenient.

“Sharing the finished products with those who helped bring the Finny’s concept to life is indescribable,” said Sara.  “The right people .  .  . the right time .  .  . the overwhelming support… amazing.”

The itsy-bitsy, “green” apparel is designed based on FINNY’S FRIENDLY FIVE:  sooo-soft pesticide-free organic cotton; earth- and baby-friendly water-based inks and dyes; fair and local labor; planet-happy packaging; and philanthropy in mind.  This winning combination is what sets designer/entrepreneurs like Sara and clothing like hers apart from the norm.  She tries hard and it shows in her work and her products.

Lots of thoughtful planning and careful consideration went in to the making of Sara’s onesies.  But the “green” doesn’t stop there.  Finny’s Greens apparel is a gift that keeps giving. “Connoisseurs of the label can pass on the love of the outgrown savvy goods as hand-me-downs to up-and coming tykes,” said Sara, “or by joining in Finny’s ONESIE RECYCLING PROGRAM.  “Gently used onesies can be sent back to Finny's Greens and we'll forward them on to an infant orphanage in Central America.”

After a winter of work with summer finally here, Sara’s “green” endeavor comes full circle, with the sample onesie designs boxed up for recycling and the newly sewn ECO-SAVVY BABY GOODS TM gift-packaged and ready for sale.  Her products can be found locally on the south end of the island at Quarter Moon Books and Gifts and online at finnysgreens.com.
