Not Like Your Mama’s Anymore.

Are you tired of changes? I am. I no sooner learn how to set up my answering machine when it becomes obsolete due to text messaging. I was so proud when I mastered how to program my VCR, until DVD players came on the market. I thought a word processor was the greatest thing since slice bread once I felt comfortable using it. But then mine broke and I was forced into the new technology of the computer, with which I struggle to conquer each day.

Please help me! What is an IPOD? A palm pilot? An MP3? It used to be that Apples and Blueberries were considered nutritious snacks. I just assumed a megapixal was similar to a pomegranate, just smaller, and a ram a type of weapon used by the police to gain forcible entry.

Oh how this world has changed!

Even Sunday school isn’t like your mama’s anymore. Years ago, (for you folks under 20, a lifetime ago), Sunday school was basically an extension of secular school, except it was held on Sunday in a church. It was sometimes difficult and involved work for kids, even though it was on the Sabbath. Somehow, Sunday school was an exception to the Sabbath rule! You read stories, answered quiz questions and memorized Bible verses (the most daunting task of all). No wonder some parents had to resort to some "gentle persuasion" to get their kids up, dressed and ready to attend Sunday school.

Today, Sunday school sure isn’t the same as your parents remember. Though the Bible is taught, the emphasis is on things that can fascinate a child. I once saw a Sunday school teacher come to church with a nine-foot ladder with a head on it. Care to guess what the lesson was about? Ever see children try to draw pictures of all the animals they know on earth, and then some. Wow! They learn that there are such animals as emus, aardvarks, pacas and mongooses, and that Noah had at least two of each on his ark. Along with all these innumerable animals were eight humans, and there wasn’t even an outhouse!

How did Moses part the Red Sea, Joshua manage to get the sun to stand still for a day, Christ change water to wine or feed thousands with a few fish and several loaves of bread? Kids are fascinated by these questions, even if they don’t fully understand them, and the Bible soon becomes a fascination for them.

It’s these mind-boggling questions that introduce the young to the Creator: who He is, and, all He has done for us, old and young alike. Hopefully, our youth will desire to know more as years go by and become the new building stones of the Body of Christ, the Church.

We at Blake’s Chapel Advent Christian Church have the facilities, materials and people who re ready, willing and able to launch your children on an exploration of God’s creation. If their participation contributes to your involvement in the church, so much the better. We’d love that too.

While all around us changes with frightening rapidity, the Word of God does not change and is a rock - the Rock which is Christ,(1Cor.10: 4), and "[we’re] standing on the Solid Rock".

Open your children to the knowledge and opportunity to know their loving God in a close personal relationship - one that will help them navigate through all of life’s shallow waters.
