By BJ Cothran
Photos from Earth Day Network

Tuesday, April 22 was the 39th Earth Day. According to U. S. Earth Day Network—a nonprofit organization founded by the organizers of the original Earth Day in 1970—“more than 1 billion people participate in Earth Day activities, making it the largest secular civic event in the world.”

What started nearly four decades ago as a celebration of environmental awareness has grown into a worldwide movement. A United States Senator from Wisconsin and environmental activist, Gaylord Nelson, called for an “environmental teach-in” that became the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970. Over 20 million people participated that first year and this year over 500 million people and national governments in 175 countries will reportedly join in the observance.
In many towns and cities across America and throughout the world, Earth Day has evolved into Earth Week. The point of the overall celebration is to get people involved. Many Earth Day activities help educate everyone in what we can do to make a change in how we live to better protect our environment. Others encourage ways to elicit policy changes and legislative action.

But most importantly, Earth Day is a good time to start. Change starts at home, the saying goes, so pick one thing you personally can change to help the environment. I know, I know, we all have too much to do as it is, but try something small. If we all did even just the smallest thing, it would make a difference in the overall effect on the environment.

Need some ideas for next year? Here are a few that we all could and should consider:

1. Use cloth napkins instead of so many paper towels.

2. Use durable coffee mugs instead of disposable cups.

3. Commute smart—share a ride, ask someone to go with you to—work, church, a social event, to pick up the kids, etc. Every time you share a ride it does make a difference.

4. Replace incandescent light bulbs with Energy Star qualified Compact Fluorescent light bulbs (CFL). You’ve heard it before but it’s worth repeating, if every household in the United States replaced one light bulb with one CFL, it would prevent enough pollution to equal removing 1 million cars from our roads. That’s a big deal!

5. Turn off the water when you brush your teeth.

6. Turn off the water when you shave.

7. Reduce/reuse/recycle. It’s not just a slogan, it’s practical and could save you time and money.

8. Go online and type in Earth Day in your browser. Hundreds of excellent websites will pop up. You’ll find thousands of suggestions on how you can make a difference, what you can do at home or with your family, ways to live green, and many places to volunteer, or just for more information about organizations where you can get involved.

So this week celebrate Earth Day 2008 with a billion other people. It’s a good thing for the environment and that’s ultimately good for all of us.

*Facts for this article came from several sources including Earth Day Network and Wikipedia.
BJ is a freelance writer and the author of Topsail Island, a photographic collection from the early days of the island. She’s also the publisher of Topsail Magazine, a local glossy that features articles about people and places on the island.

On a special note: According to Wikipedia, the date has significant meaning in the following:

1. It was the birthday of actor Eddie Albert. “Because of Eddie Albert’s early work with environmental causes and groups, when International Earth Day was created, it was decided it must be held on April 22 because that is his birthday.”

2. April 21 was the birthday of John Muir who founded the Sierra Club. “This is not lost on organizers who thought that April 22 was Muir’s birthday.”

3. April 22 is the birthday of the Julius Sterling Morton, the founder of Arbor Day, a national tree-planting holiday started in 1872.

Topsail Island, NC - (NAPSA)-Everyone agrees that roses are beautiful, but many also believe that roses are hard to grow. Today, nothing could be farther from the truth. New varieties give homeowners exactly what they want-brilliant roses that are a breeze to grow. Plus, roses are the only plant that will bloom repeatedly throughout the season: a sweet reward for very little effort.

With hybridizing advances, roses are more vigorous, fragrant and will bloom more frequently than ever before. If you have sunlight and water, you have what it takes to raise the perfect rose.
Sadly, the rose remains shrouded in misconception. Here are four myth busters that prove you don't need a green thumb to successfully grow roses.

Myth 1: Amateurs need not apply. Think that only expert gardeners can grow roses, and the rest of us should throw in the trowel? Wrong! The truth is that roses are very easy to grow. The key is to start with the best varieties from your local garden center. Look for roses that have won the All-America Rose Selections (AARS) seal of approval. Only the very best new roses are named AARS winners. These are sure to flower to your heart's content with minimal effort.

Myth 2: Roses are labor intensive. Roses have an undeserved reputation for being high maintenance and fussy. If you think growing roses means constantly spraying, grooming, feeding and pruning, think again. Experts agree that success can be as easy as choosing an award-winning rose plant and giving it regular water and six hours of sun a day.

Myth 3: All roses are disease prone. In reality, the number of disease-resistant roses has been steadily increasing, which means that it's now possible to find gorgeous, worry-free roses that will flourish with little effort.

Myth 4: Only old roses are proven performers. Many people are sentimental and tend to stick with roses they know from their childhood memories. In truth, new varieties are more vigorous, have more blooms and are easier to care for. Not many people covet the old Edsels these days, so in the same vein, now is a good time to introduce a modern rose plant to your garden.

What's the easiest way to conquer these myths? Look for the All-America Rose Selections' "seal of approval," which means you'll be getting the best roses for your garden. Only AARS winners have passed two years of testing in 23 gardens across the U.S., representing all climate zones. These roses have proven themselves in the AARS gardens, so they're sure to thrive in yours.
Topsail Island, NC - (NAPSA)-Each day, millions of Americans take dietary supplements, including vitamins and minerals, in an effort to stay healthy and fill dietary gaps.

However, they are not risk-free. Some supplements can be dangerous if taken with certain medications or may have harmful side effects. Talking to your doctor or pharmacist before taking a supplement can help you find out if it is safe for you to use. Here are some guidelines to follow before taking a supplement:

¥ Drug interactions: Remember to tell your doctor about any dietary supplements you are taking when starting a prescription medication. Certain supplements, especially when taken in excess, have serious side effects and can have dangerous interactions when taken with prescription medications.

¥ Follow guidelines: There are different types and amounts of vitamins and supplements that are needed, depending on your age, gender and lifestyle. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor about which one is right for you.

¥ Keep your guard up: Just because the label says "all natural" doesn't mean that the product is safe or effective. The supplement industry is generally un-regulated, so potency and ingredients can vary widely. Also, be wary of any curative claims made about a product without sound scientific research to back it up.

¥ No substitutions: Never substitute prescribed medications with vitamins or supplements. Chances are it will not have the same effect and may even be dangerous. If cost is an issue, discuss lower-priced medication options with your doctor, such as switching to a generic drug or using a mail-order pharmacy for medications taken on an ongoing basis.

¥ Don't overdo it: If you are taking a supplement, don't exceed the recommended amount. Some products can be harmful when you take a large dose or take them for a long time.

¥ Do not self-diagnose: The best thing you can do before taking vitamins is to ask your doctor or pharmacist what your needs are and what's safe and effective for you. Remember that supplements are not intended to treat, prevent or cure a disease.

A new program could help safeguard the health of Marines and their families.

Topsail Island, NC - (NAPSA)-The Marine Corps has recently created an on-line registry to help keep Marines, family members and civilian employees who resided or worked aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune between 1957 and 1987 informed about past water quality issues at the base. We need the help of all friends of the Marine Corps to locate these individuals and have them sign up on the registry.

Identifying the Problem

In the early 1980's, two solvents, trichloroethylene (TCE) and perchloroethylene (PCE), both unregulated at the time, were found in two water systems that served the Hadnot Point and Tarawa Terrace areas of the base. When it was determined that specific groundwater wells were impacted, they were immediately shut down in early 1985.

The drinking water at Camp Lejeune today is regularly tested and safe to drink.

Taking Action

The Department of the Navy is funding two independent studies to determine if there is an association between exposure to the water and certain health effects. The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) is studying whether there is an association between exposure to the water and certain health conditions in children in the womb, the most susceptible population. The study is expected to be complete in 2009. In addition, the National Academy of Sciences is conducting a study to evaluate other potential risks associated with exposure. Their study is expected to be complete in the fall of 2008.

The Marine Corps intends to notify all registrants of the results of these studies.

Implementing Solutions

The Secretary of the Navy and the Commandant of the Marine Corps are committed to contacting as many former residents and workers as possible who may have been exposed to these chemicals between 1957 and 1987. Unfortunately, Marine Corps and Department of Defense personnel databases do not go back to 1957 and are incomplete. The registry will enable the Marine Corps to collect current contact information for former residents and workers and will allow us perform a more thorough notification when the studies are complete.

Marine officials encourage former base residents and employees to register and visit the official website (www.Marines.mil/clsurvey), contact the toll-free Camp Lejeune Water Study Call Center (877) 261-9782, or email clwater@usmc.mil.

A border of beautiful hydrangea blooms along a walkway can be a step in the right direction-and easier to create than many realize.

Topsail Island, NC - (NAPSA)-A garden filled with billowy hydrangea blossoms can be very popular. These classic blooms have been gracing the pages of glossy magazines and tantalizing gardeners for decades. The problem is they've been labeled as difficult to grow.

The truth is hydrangeas have been given a bad rap. They're actually quite simple to grow when you choose an easygoing variety. Luckily, breeders love these plants, too, and more and more gardener-friendly selections are being offered each year.

One of the most reliable is 'Limelight.'This hardy variety flourishes in full sun or part shade with very little effort. It's truly a standout with large (6- to 12-inch-long), robust, lime-green blooms that mature to white then turn pink and burgundy. Sometimes all four colors are present at one time. Perhaps better yet, the flowers form on the current season's growth. That means you don't have to worry about harsh weather zapping your flower buds and robbing you of a spectacular display, as is the case with many other varieties.

Because 'Limelight' is so easygoing and adaptable, soil conditions do not completely alter the flower color, which is also the case of other hydrangeas, although fertile soils will produce more-intense colors. If your soil is poor or lean, an annual dose of fertilizer in spring will boost the color.

With 'Limelight' you don't have to be intimidated by pruning either. Because it really doesn't require much attention, you don't have to pull out the shears very often. In early spring, plants benefit from a little freshening up by thinning out older stems before the leaves appear. The only other time you may want to make a cut is to remove deadheads or harvest fresh blooms for bouquets or dried flower arrangements. The flowers are excellent for table centerpieces. To keep good color in dried hydrangea blooms, simply cut them when they're slightly past their peak and let them dry in a vase of water.

In the garden, 'Limelight' shines in the mixed border with other shrubs and perennials. Blue Mist Shrub, Butterfly Bush, Joe-Pye weed and ornamental grasses all make great companions. At 6 to 8 feet tall and wide, 'Limelight' makes an excellent seasonal screen along the driveway or backyard property line. It is also well suited for foundation beds or massing.

If you have always dreamed of a picture-book hydrangea planting, don't wait another season or believe all the difficulty rumors. 'Limelight' is an easy-to-grow hydrangea and is readily available at most retail garden centers. To find one nearby, visit www.colorchoiceplants.com.

Adding chips to this burger recipe turned out to be a winning combination.

Topsail Island, NC - (NAPSA)-Most people eat chips alongside their burgers, but Karen Bernards had a hunch that they would be more valuable to her inside her burger…and she was right.
As the $50,000 grand prize winner of last year's Sutter Home Build a Better Burger National Contest and Cook-Off(r), Bernards crushed spicy Thai-flavored potato chips into her beef patties and delighted the judges' taste buds with a flavor that they could not forget. Her Sweet-Hot Thai Burgers scored high marks across the board from a tough group of judges.

According to head judge James McNair, "Karen's burger had a great blend of flavors. I loved the 'oniony' taste she was able to create by adding the chips."

"I was inspired by my love of Thai food and tried to capture those distinct flavors in my burger by using lime, ginger, sweet chili sauce, cilantro and basil," Bernards explains. "When the lightbulb went off to mix spicy chips into the patties, I knew I was on to something special."

Sutter Home will be taking entries for the 2008 Sutter Home Build a Better Burger Contest and Cook-Off from April 15 through August 18. For contest entry rules, visit www.sutterhome.com or send a self-addressed stamped envelope to: Build a Better Burger, Sutter Home Winery, P.O. Box 248, St. Helena, Calif., 94574-0248. Build a Better Burger is not open to residents of California or Utah. Ten finalists will be flown to the Napa Valley to compete in a burger grilling cook-off on September 27, 2008, which will be judged by a renowned panel of chefs and food industry experts.

Build a Better Burger is sponsored by Sutter Home Family Vineyards, National Cattlemen's Beef Association, the California Avocado Commission, Colavita Olive Oil, BIC Multi-Purpose Lighter, Lea & Perrins, Treasure Cave(r) Blue Cheese, Tabasco(r) brand Chipotle Pepper Sauce, Johnsonville Sausage and Weber(r) Grill Creations(r).

Prepare a medium-hot fire in a charcoal grill, or preheat a gas grill to medium-high.
Mayonnaise: Whisk the mayonnaise, lime juice and cilantro in a small bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and set aside.

Salad: Whisk lime juice, garlic, olive oil, salt, sweet chili sauce, ginger, cilantro and basil in a small bowl. Combine the cucumber, red pepper, and bean sprouts in a large bowl. Toss with the dressing to coat. Cover with plastic wrap and set aside.

Patties: Combine the chuck, salt, sweet chili sauce, green onions, and chip pieces in a large bowl, handling as little as possible. Shape into 6 patties to fit the buns. Loosely cover with plastic wrap and set aside.

When the grill is ready, brush the rack with vegetable oil. Place the patties on the rack, cover and cook, turning once until done to preference, 5 to 7 minutes on each side for medium. Place the buns, cut side down, on the outer edges of the grill rack to toast lightly during the last 2 minutes of grilling.

To assemble the burgers, spread a generous amount of the cilantro mayonnaise over the cut sides of the buns. On each bun bottom, place a grilled patty, followed by equal portions of the Thai salad; add the top bun and serve.

Makes 6 burgers

Cleaning your gas grill is key for long-lasting performance.

Topsail Island, NC - (NAPSA)-Have you put cleaning your grill on the bottom of your to-do list? You're not alone. According to the 19th Annual Weber GrillWatch Survey, 38 percent of grill owners say they clean their grill from once to a few times per year. And six percent admit they have never cleaned their grill.

"A quality grill should last for years," said Ernie Boys, vice president product management, Weber-Stephen Products Co. "With regular maintenance and cleaning, you can extend the day-to-day performance and ultimately, the life of your grill."

Boys recommends instituting a daily and monthly cleaning regime depending on how often the grill gets used. As a rule of thumb, grills should be cleaned before each use. Burn off any residue by turning the grill on high, then brush the cooking grates with a stiff wire grill brush.

For a deep cleaning, inspect and clean the cooking grates, burner tubes, Flavorizer bars (or heat distribution system), warming racks, exterior elements, and grease collection tray. You will need a wire grill brush, fine steel wool pads, mild dish soap, a sponge or dishcloth, and a 1-inch putty knife.

Start by turning off the gas supply and follow these steps from Weber:

Stop The Blockage

Clear the burner tubes of any blockages, which restrict gas flow and may prevent the burners from lighting. To clean tubes, brush the portholes with a stainless steel wire brush in an up-and-down motion. Do not brush lengthwise across the ports, as this will only push debris from one hole to another.

Hold On To The Flavor

Many grills contain heat distribution systems such as Flavorizer bars to help prevent flare-ups. Occasionally brush the bars with a grill brush or scrape with a putty knife. Then wipe with a rag and warm, soapy water.

Clean The Warming Racks

A soapy, fine steel wool pad will keep the warming racks and grill baskets clean and free of smoke stains and debris. Rub the racks gently and then rinse thoroughly.

Get To The Bottom Of It

Remove the bottom tray from under the grill and place over a trash can. Carefully scrape the inside of the grill with a putty knife and push the residue through the bottom hole. To deep clean the tray, use warm, soapy water and a fine steel wool pad. Check the catch pan liner monthly and replace when needed.

Make It Shine

Clean grease drippings on exterior surfaces by using mild, soapy water. Never use an abrasive, lemon-based or oven cleaner, as it can scratch the stainless steel or remove the paint finish. If you have a stainless steel finish, use an environmentally-friendly stainless steel cleaner and a soft cloth to give it a nice shine and remove fingerprints. For porcelain enamel, use a cloth and warm, soapy water.

While cleaning the grill, take stock of any worn or corroded pieces. Call the manufacturer's customer service to order replacement parts. In addition, help to keep the grill protected from the elements by investing in a durable, weather-resistant cover.

Topsail Island, NC - (NAPSA)-To keep your home healthy, says Dr. Jim Sears, pediatrician and co-host of the new TV show "The Doctors," sporadic cleaning is not enough. "Regular disinfection is the best defense," says Dr. Sears. "While cleaning removes the dust and debris that have settled on a surface, disinfection eliminates the hidden germs that can make your family sick."

Fortunately, helping protect your family from germs doesn't have to be a chore. Dr. Sears has time-saving tips and techniques for busy families that don't want to lose precious time with the ones they love.

Know Where Germs Are Hiding

Germs often lurk in what appear to be the cleanest places in the home. A recent study found that the germ most commonly responsible for serious staph infections was found in 26 percent of bathtubs versus 6 percent of garbage cans.

Keep Supplies Organized

Store all your tools for cleaning and disinfection in a portable caddy to help you quickly and conveniently move from room to room.

Never Go Around A Room Twice

Start in one corner and work your way around to the other end. Go from the top of the room to the bottom in an orderly fashion to avoid having to retouch what you've already cleaned.
Kill Germs With The Swipe Of A Wipe

A recent survey by the Hygiene Council found that four out of 10 Americans admitted to regularly cleaning their kitchen surfaces with a dish towel or sponge, both of which can harbor and spread bacteria. Prevent the spread of bacteria and speed up cleaning by using premoistened disinfecting wipes to quickly and effectively kill germs. Store disinfecting wipes around the house as they are convenient for routine touch-ups.

Rally The Troops

To Conquer Cleaning

Get the whole family involved in the cleaning process. After all, toys host a dangerous range of bacteria. Ask your kids to pick out the plastic toys they use most. Then spray or wipe the toys with a disinfectant before rinsing them in warm water. Once the toys air-dry, they are ready for play.

Cut Down On Germs With Targeted Disinfection

Some viruses can survive on commonly touched surfaces for up to a full month. Take 10 minutes a week to disinfect surfaces your family touches every day, including doorknobs, light switches, toilet flush handles, faucets and drains with a powerful disinfectant such as Lysol(r) Disinfectant Spray.

For more information about germ hot spots, you can visit the Hygiene Council at www.hygienecouncil.com or visit www.homesolutionsnews.us/house for more helpful cleaning tips and techniques.

The Right Step-A simple walking plan could help reduce your risk of arthritis.

Topsail Island, NC - (NAPSA)-Arthritis, the most common cause of disability in the United States, affects one in five adults and nearly 300,000 children. It is predicted that by the year 2030, 67 million people will be affected by arthritis, up from current prevalence estimates of 46 million people. What's particularly disturbing is that the prevalence of osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis, continues to rise even though it can often be prevented by staying active.

Patience White, M.D., chief public health officer for the Arthritis Foundation, is not surprised that these numbers continue to rise. "Americans continue to become more sedentary despite overwhelming evidence that there are tremendous benefits from walking as little as 10 minutes, three times a day. If we continue to ignore the importance of movement, as the nation's baby boomer population ages, the prevalence of arthritis will become staggering."

Fortunately, starting a walking program is easier than you might think. Dr. White's recommendations include:

Walk Three Times a Day

Walking for exercise should take low-to-moderate exertion. When you first start your program, your goal may be walking 10 minutes every day. Once this no longer requires much effort, consider increasing your goal to 10 minutes three times a day or 30 minutes several times each week. As you reach this goal, change your route to include a slight incline. While it's important to consult your physician about your personal exercise plan and goals, also listen to your body! Consider keeping a journal to document your goals and the path to getting there.

Stretch

It is important to stretch before and after walking. Remember that walking involves more than just your legs, so be sure to stretch your lower back, chest and arms as well.

Bring a Friend

Having a walking partner is a great way to stay motivated! Not only can you encourage each other to stay active, but talking as you walk is a great way to pass the time. Whether a neighbor, co-worker or even man's best friend, find someone to walk with and make a schedule that you can both stick to.

Maintain Your Ideal Weight

As people gain weight they increase the stress placed on their joints, particularly their knees. Not to mention that being overweight may cause a person to become tired quickly and not able to follow a healthy exercise regimen. Before beginning a walking program, work with a health care professional to determine your ideal weight and the best plan for getting there.

Celebrate Your Success

While the best reward for your efforts is better health, it's okay to treat yourself as well. Reward yourself as you reach each new goal. Celebrate by buying a new pair of walking shoes, new workout clothes or an MP3 player loaded with your favorite walking soundtrack.

Part of the Arthritis Foundation's efforts to get Americans walking is through its annual Arthritis Walk event held each May during Arthritis Awareness Month. Arthritis Walk events are held in communities across the nation to help raise awareness and generate funds for research and programs. Walkers can sign up alone or as part of a team and can come out to support a family member or friend. Dogs are welcome in most sites, too.

To learn more about getting involved in an Arthritis Walk near you, visit www.arthritis.org or call (877) 232-2898.

Hi folks, Capt. David here with this weeks outdoors report.

The fish are biting folks! The water temps in the sound are around the low 70's and the reds are tearing it up. The creeks off the waterway seem to be the best places to look for a school. I took a charter out on Sunday and we caught 19 back in a creek on cut bait and live bait. All I could find was little pinfish but they were hitting them.

The surf is giving up some Red and Black drum along with some whiting and all different sizes of Bluefish. Heck I've hooked a couple in the last that looked to be in the 10 lb range but they cut us off before we could boat them. The best thing I can advise you folks to do is to GO FISHING! It ain't going to do anything but get better.

Turkey season is still in till the 10th so if you ain't got one yet, there's still hope! Well I'm going on a fishing trip/vacation this coming week to the Fla Keys, so next weeks column is going to be missing ya'll. Hope you understand and I will give you folks the details when I get back. So till week after next be safe and take a kid with you!

Warm weather and warmer waters mean the fish are starting to bite. Bluefish are everywhere and unless you want to lose a lot of rigs, use a wire leader! Don't stick your thumb in a Blue's mouth or you might not have the ability to hitch-hike anymore. Redfish and black drum are in the surf along with Mullet. Reds are starting to bite along the waterway and around some of the docks. The Trout bite up in the River is still hot if you know where to go! The inlet bars are great places to look for a nice red this time of the year. Lots of dogfish are around too.

Offshore all the fish are biting where they usually are when the weather permits. Folks, it's been rough out there lately. Kings are out 25 miles or so and I've heard of some Bonita 10 miles out. Grouper are on the ledges and rockpiles starting about 20 miles and the closer reefs are full of Black bass this time of the year. It shouldn't be too long till the weather calms and small boaters can get out.

On the hunting side, I went to the mountains this past weekend and saw turkeys, Talked to Turkeys, and still didn't get one! I went to a seminar on Turkey hunting a few weeks back and the guy said it averages 4 yrs to get your first bird. I'm beginning to think he's right. Don't think I'm going to give up folks. I hate it when people tell me stuff like that. I have to prove them wrong! A friend said it was a character flaw. Well anyway folks thats about it for this week so remember to take a kid with you and be safe!

As a general guide, try to get some physical activity three times a week for at least 20 minutes each time.

Topsail Island, NC -(NAPSA)-If you want to lose weight-get moving. Don't just move on a plan to cut fat and calories. Find ways to incorporate extra physical activity into your life.

You may be pleasantly surprised at the benefits physical activity has to offer. For example, regular exercise can:

¥ help burn calories. When the body is in calorie deficit, it will burn stored fat for energy;

¥ help reduce stress, which could otherwise lead to snacking and overeating;

¥ improve your sense of well-being and self-esteem;

¥ help you look and feel better.

Always consult your doctor before starting an exercise program, but as a general guide, try to get some physical activity three times a week for at least 20 minutes each time.

It's important to start small. Many people overdo it on the first few days and stop because they get tired, sore or discouraged.

Do what moves you. If you love to dance, find a class or group that meets regularly. If swimming, cycling or skating brings out the kid in you, discover new places where you can get started. One of the easiest and most affordable physical activities is walking.

Exercise adds up quickly. The great thing about exercise is you don't have to do it all at once. Add it to your activities throughout the day by sneaking in a little extra effort to the things you already do:

¥ take the stairs instead of the elevator;

¥ when shopping, park in the far corner of the lot;

¥ instead of e-mailing a co-worker, visit his or her office;

¥ when you walk the dog, go around the block an extra time;

¥ at lunchtime, walk to a nearby park and eat outdoors.

Measure your progress. Once you begin, record in a journal how long you spent on physical activity or how far you went.

Team up. Get with a friend to help each other stick with a plan.

Your pharmacist can now hand you a package of pills made to meet your personal daily prescription requirements.

(NAPSA)-For many of the more than 150 million Americans who take more than one prescription medication daily, life may be about to change for the better.

That's because a new kind of prescription packaging can help consumers take the right medications at the right time, every time.

How It Works

The pharmacist prepares multiple prescription or over-the-counter medication doses in a sealed, clear plastic packet, custom printed with the patient's name; the names of the medications, their strengths and appearances; dosing time; and other details.

The packages come in strips with all doses for a given time period (e.g., 30 days or 90 days), perforated for easy tear-off and arthritic approved for easy opening.

Free Sample

Called onePAC, the packaging is available using technology from Parata Systems at pharmacies across the United States and Canada. You can request a free sample at www.myonepac.org or 1-888-onepac1 (663-7221).

What Else To Do-And Don't

In addition to considering new packaging options like onePAC, here are some other valuable do's and don'ts when it comes to taking your medications correctly:

¥ Four in 10 (43 percent) older Americans have been prescribed medications by more than one physician. Make sure you communicate to your pharmacist all the drugs you are taking.

¥ According to the World Health Organization, only about 50 percent of patients typically take their medicines as prescribed. Be sure you talk with your pharmacist and understand how to take all your prescriptions.

¥ Nearly one in three customers didn't fill all their new prescriptions in the past year, according to Wilson Research. Be sure to get refills filled.

¥ One in five respondents believe pharmacies help them remember to take medications as recommended. Choose your pharmacy for the care you receive, not for how quickly you can get in and out.

A little care can keep the grass greener on your side of the fence.

Topsail Island, NC - (NAPSA)-A beautiful lawn is supposed to be thick and green. It's not supposed to have bright yellow dandelions, red blooming clover and scraggly crabgrass and nutgrass.

Although it's impossible to kill every single weed, most can be prevented, says Bayer Advanced(tm) Garden Expert Lance Walheim, author of "Lawn Care for Dummies."

"Weed control is more than making a pretty yard. Weeds compete with grasses for water and nutrients," says Walheim. "A well-cared-for, vigorous lawn will resist weed invasions."

Here are five steps to keep your yard in top shape for weed resistance:

1. Mow high. Mowing at the upper end of the recommended height for your grass type encourages deeper roots and better heat and drought tolerance since the grass helps shade the soil to reduce evaporation and maximize soil moisture content. This can help reduce the need for more frequent watering. Set your mower at 1-1/2 inches high for common Bermuda; 1 inch high for hybrid Bermuda; 3 inches high for tall fescue; 2-1/2 inches for Kentucky bluegrass; and 2-1/2 to 3 inches for St. Augustine.

2. Water properly. Wet the soil down to a depth of 6 to 8 inches. Shallow watering results in a shallow root system. To check the depth of moisture, insert a rod or screwdriver into the soil; it will stop when it reaches dry dirt.

3. Fertilize at the right time of year for your particular type of grass (usually fall or spring for cool-season lawns and late spring and early summer for warm-season lawns) and control insects such as grubs that eat grass roots.

4. Aerate (remove small cores of soil) and dethatch as needed for better water and nutrient penetration.

5. Kill weeds. Many products on the market require you to know what kind of weeds you have in your lawn. Bayer Advanced(r) All-In-One Lawn Weed & Crabgrass Killer works two ways to kill over 200 kinds of broadleaf weeds-including dandelions and clover and grassy weeds such as crabgrass-in one easy step without harming your lawn.

For St. Augustine and similar lawns, Bayer Advanced Southern Weed Killer for Lawns controls 200 types of common broadleaf weeds such as dandelions, dollarweed and clover.

Always read and follow label instructions.
